Butcher injured by a knife in a meat processing factory
Robert Bogdan, 30, was working on a production line at Cranberry Foods Ltd's factory in Scropton manning a station to remove meat from turkey carcasses. A coned conveyor transported the carcasses to his and a number of other butchery stations along the production line, where the workers removed different parts of the meat with a carving knife. Each work area was supposed to have a knife-sharpening station installed, so workers could sharpen their knives to stop them becoming blunt.
Mr Bogdan was working at the beginning of the production line, but there was no sharpening station installed in his work area. When he noticed that his knife was getting blunt he walked over to a sink positioned a few feet behind him, and sharpened his knife. He then turned to walk back to his work area while holding the knife towards him. As he did so, his sleeve became caught on the frame of the sink and the knife jolted and stabbed him in the stomach. A colleague called an ambulance and he was taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery to repair the four-inch wound.
